This is something for the brave ones – the reward is that you get to spend 2 sunrises and 2 sunsets on the sea.
A 48 hours row may also be the prerequisite for the Black Sea Crossing. It would give us enough time to get to know each other, to become familiar with the equipment on board, and even to practice important safety routines on board such as Man Overboard and deploying of the para-anchor. By the second day you’ll know your body a lot better in terms of effort capability, reaction to sea motion and the alternance of rowing and resting shifts. You’ll have time to improve your routines, to know which food works for you. Bruises and chafings will also tell you which shoes or gloves or shirts would protect you better and help you row more efficiently for longer.
Use the night shifts to reflect on your motivation of rowing an ocean – how your perception changed over what it means and over how capable you feel now.
Don’t be fooled by the count-down: you’ll have to stay focused for the whole 48 days.
Interaction with the other members of the crew is important, so don’t hesitate to provide feedback and ask for it;all these while you keep an eye on the others on deck, to make sure they’re safe – and they’ll do the same.
